Why do people still buy Hybrid cars?

So today VW announced the new Polo BlueMotion -Europe only :-( It gets 60MPG around town and and amazing 73 on the freeway! It will go 714 miles on a single tank of gas. That and it has a top speed near 110 MPH from the 3 cylinder diesel and has a sticker price below $13,000 (cars are more expensive in Europe). Compare that to a Prius that starts around $22,000 and that is a ton of gas (3,000 gallons, so acutally about 13 Tons of fuel). So considering that the Prius Hybid actually gets worse gas milage than the Polo (51MPG around town and 60MPG on the freeway). It just doesn't make sense. At those milages I would only need to fill the 10 gallon tank every 9 weeks. Please VW, bring this car stateside.
